Billy and the Landlady is a project based off a short story by Roald Dahl. It’s about a cocky young man moving into the bigger cities of England where his naivety brings him more trouble than he’s able to handle.
To start designing I push myself with traditional media to force out more ideas. This way I’m finding out what’s important for the design without getting into the finer details. Here I did a collage but I will also play with crayons, blunt pencils, and markers.
I will do studies of actors and friends to find characteristics that I can incorporate into the character. I’ll also play around with adding contrast to keep the character interesting. I wanted to make sure he felt blocky, but by adding more curve to the plaid pattern in his vest felt pleasing.
I’ll quickly lay out sketches that explore his mannerisms and expressions, and if other designs are far enough along I’ll try to get them together to find how they interact.
Once the design is far enough along I’ll explore what colors work well. Here I decided that he should feel more earthy and warm which could contrast her colors which were cold and icy.
